How can I prevent scarring due to scratching itchy wounds? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

It must be difficult to cope with the itch and scarring. The bumps do look quite extensive on the shin. You are correct in recognizing that the constant scratching and picking at the lesions is causing it to worsen.

It is important for you to refrain from doing this as far as possible. Simple measures like doing a cold compress to area can help to relieve the itch.

I do advised you to see your dermatologist/doctor to help you manage the skin condition better. There are treatments that can help the bumps settled faster and improve your condition. eg.topical creams like topical steroids or antibiotics can be prescribed to help to relieve the inflammation and anti-histamines can be prescribed to lessen the itch. With the appropriate treatment, your condition should be able to settle well.

Hope this helps!

What should I do next for hives?

The description of your rashes seems like hives. That being said, it is safer to consult a doctor to confirm the diagnosis of hives. If it is hives, both classes of oral medications: 1) anti-histamines such as cetirizine, telecast etc and 2) a short course of low dose oral prednisolone (steroid) should be prescribed by your doctor for quick and effective recovery. Topical steroid medications will be ineffective. Calamine lotion can help with relieving itch but it does not help with controlling the underlying inflammatory response.

How do doctors identify possible causes of an insect bite? (photo)

Insect bite reactions are due to hypersensitivity response of the body to the insect bites. The area of the bites gets progressively redder, inflamed and itchy and the inflammation response can be very intense and severe at times, even leading to the development of blisters. Bed bug, sandflies and fleas are some common causes of insect bite reactions but it is often difficult to tell the exact insect that caused the bite from looking at the skin lesions. Insect bite reactions often require the use of topical steroid creams to settle the inflammation.
