What is the difference between visiting a beauty spa or doctor clinic for hair removal in Singapore?

Doctor's Answers 3

Hair Removal is not a simple procedure. It involves sophisticated assessment and decision making. I would strongly recommend going to a medical clinic for such procedures for a few reasons:

1) IPL or Laser hair removal are not a 100% safe procedure. There are some risks involved such as burns and scarring. It is also not suitable for everyone. To be safe, you should see a doctor to get a proper assessment and advice before undergoing the procedure.

2) Risk and complication management is an important part of aesthetic treatment. If problems arise after hair removal, beauty spa will not have the resources and ability to manage them. You will end up frustrated and unhappy.

3) Medical clinics use medical grade IPL or laser to perform hair removal. These devices are not available in beauty spa because beauty spa do not have the license to purchase them. Medical grade devices are safer and more effective.

I hope this clarifies.

SHR and IPL are good options for hair removal. There are other lasers that can also remove hair effectively.

The main differences between medical clinics and beauty spas are:

1) A ability to manage complications .

No procedure hair removal is 100% safe. This is a complication, it is important to manage complications using prescription-grade creams and medicines.

2) More Effective Medical-grade Lasers

Only licensed medical clinics are authorized by the Ministry of Health to possess medical-grade hair removal lasers, which are more effective. This translates to cost-and time-savings in the long-run.

Hope that this helps.

I would actually say, it really depends on what is being done, and what your budget it.

In general, treatments at clinics would cost most per session as there also involves a medical consultation. The medical-grade machines would in some cases result in fewer sessions needed.

Some spas/beauty salons can provide good treatments, as repeated treatments (albeit in weaker energy settings) in the hands of good therapists can get great results with lesser cost.

Basically what I am saying is - it depends on who and where you go to, rather than saying simply that CLINICS is always better than SPAS.

How effective is fractional Co2 laser vs Infini RF for acne scars?

Good questions! I agree with Dr Chua’s reply on the pros and cons of Fractional CO2 lasers versus Infini RF. In addition, I would like to address your question on the ideal length of time between subcision and Infini RF treatments. The ideal interval between treatments is 4-6 weeks. This is to allow for adequate skin recovery. Hope that this answers your questions!

Is PRP injection available for acne scarring in Singapore?

PRP at the present moment is not available in Singapore. It does help with acne scarring though, and you might have to go to neighbouring countries to do the treatment (including Malaysia). Having said that, you can consider Rejuran/skin boosters/microneedling that can help in a similar fashion. Your 2nd question on which is better — it depends on the severity and type of scars. But usually Fractional laser is the backbone of laser therapy. So consult your doctor early to discuss the available options.
